I don't buy the idea of being a global citizen. Surely, that is not needed to accomplish what she is after. I would argue that it hinders the effort buy allow capital markets little accountability to the state in which tax dollars prop up their efforts. What's more, most nations, and their citizens hardly see themselves in such light for many reasons; culture, religion, race, spirituality. "Good fences make good neighbors" a line from Robert Frost. Speaks to an external barrier that also lies in the mind and represented by our bodies as well. Obama, in has last speach spoke to the flaws of man and his responsibility to our state. He said without saying it out-right (unfortunately), "I am a patriot" and the guardian of this nation first and a citizen of the world second.
Unfortunately, our spiritual selves is not evolving at the same rate as technology and that is the greatest flaw in Jacquelines world citizenry.
I personally am focusing a local investing by creating a non-profit climbing gym that operates on donations and a sliding scale fee system. So, far its working well and we should have a full fledged climbing gym by the End of January! And a junior climbing team by the fall of next year. Cheers!

Re: Microfinance Breakdown (DRAFT)

What a great overview!! The Microcredit Summit that you mention gives out interesting campaign reports such as http://www.microcreditsummit.o... if you want to include nice presentations in your overview Alex Osterwalder has made a popular one at http://www.slideshare.net/Alex...

There are still many challenges relating to microfinance one being transparency: What local actors are the MFI working with? What activities are being done by the MFI? What is it offering entrepreneurs in terms of services and cost of capital? How are the services delivered? What are the social performance of the loans and its results?

I find business models using microfinance infrastructure really interesting. Microfinance organizations that have established brands and high quality relationships with local entrepreneurs in remote markets have an interesting possibility to leverage these relationships as a platform for developing and distributing various products and services. One example is Grameen Shakti in Bangladesh, that leverages the brand and infrastructure of Grameen Bank's nationwide microfinance program. It was created in 1996 to reach rural people with clean and affordable energy in a country where 80% of the people still do not have access to electricity. The revenue model is often based on several shopkeepers sharing one system, with the electricity enabling new business opportunities. By 2002 Grameen Shakti reached break-even and by 2008 it had installed more than 180000 solar home systems, installing more than 8000 new ones each month.

my last volunteer stint was a couple of weeks ago at the yosemite facelift in yosemite national park. i helped clean up around the historic camp 4, the base of half dome, and a few other places in the valley. together, we volunteers removed over 60,000 POUNDS of trash from the park over the course of 5 days. it was hot, sweaty work but well worth it. as a climber, it means a lot to me to help preserve one of the most beautiful and unique climbing areas in the world. the yosemite facelift is an annual event and i will be sure to go again next year.

i also won a new rope at one of the facelift raffles. =)

Here's a great microfinance documentary, in case you'd like to add it to your mind map:
http://www.kbyutv.org/smallfor...

I have a copy if you'dlike to borrow it.

There's actually quite a deal of additional info on that site as well.

Anyway, thanks for putting such a great resource together. I hope to use it (and contribute) more fully someday.

Re: The Zen of the Zero Inbox

Just came upon this Lifehacker post and thought I would share since relevant: http://lifehacker.com/5364596/...

Re: Microfinance Breakdown (DRAFT)

Matt,
Thanks for stopping by and reading.

Usually microfinance has the connotation of being used for helping others alleviate themselves out of poverty, so not sure I would consider Prosper and Zopa to fall into this realm as the financings can be used for anything, not necessarily to address a social ill. However, they definitely COULD be used in this sense. So perhaps not a direct microfinance player, but definitely an outlying competitor?

I had yet to run across these two companies and greatly appreciate you bringing them to my attention!

Thanks.
Rachel

Re: Microfinance Breakdown (DRAFT)

Not sure if it was on the map - I didn't see a search function. However, would you consider crowd-sourced funding from like Prosper.com or Zopa.com as micro-finance? While not explicitly limited to small amounts there's nothing stopping a person from only getting a small loan from either service.

Re: Microfinance Breakdown (DRAFT)

Thanks for this comment. I still don't have Q2 data as that will be released at month's end, but I thought I would include this blurb in case of interest to any of you readers.

" There are only 16 VC-backed companies left in IPO registration. This includes LogMeIn, which is road-showing and expects to price within the next few weeks. I know P&L is king -- and LogMeIn's is great -- but I also wonder if a successful LogMeIn IPO could have broader ramifications.

After all, it's a techie type of tech deal, rather than a consumer type of tech deal (i.e., OpenTable). A majority of venture deals in the IT sector belong to the former class, but investors have been beaten down by talk that the public markets don't love them anymore. Perhaps LogMeIn could serve as an emboldening flirtation."

Re: The Zen of the Zero Inbox

Gabe,
Ah, this is a great tip.
